Six months as a Digital Marketing Executive

For anyone starting out in this brilliant field and looking for some tips and tricks, this one's for you. From Ricky Sayles, Digital Marketing Executive

As we hit mid-October, over six months as a Digital Marketing Executive with Fox Agency seem to have flown by. All in all, these past few months really couldn’t have gone better for me and the agency. The Fox Agency team is growing as a whole and within that Team Digital have taken on a total of three new members. We even managed to pick up an award at the Prolific North Champions Awards, gaining a Highly Commended credit in the Large Integrated Agency of the Year category.

So, what have you learnt as a rookie…?

Let’s start with the most important stuff. I always wanted to work for a business with a great culture, and most importantly, be part of a team that would allow me to reach my full potential. With Fox Agency, I got the full package. Over the past six months, I have been allowed to get my teeth into all sorts of tasks from, campaign activation and optimisations, client reporting, organic social scheduling, and writing huge amounts of ad copy (I enjoy it I promise). I have shadowed some great people over the past few months from many different areas of digital who have helped me develop in a variety of fields.

The most important thing I want to make clear about starting a career in the crazy world of digital marketing is to jump straight in. The best thing about marketing is that on most occasions it’s hard to be wrong. And that’s not to say that marketeers aren’t incredibly talented and gifted at what they do. But I’ve discovered it’s all about testing, finding out what works and what doesn’t, and if it something needs amending, you can learn and adapt.

Tips and tricks of the trade

Joining the big brilliant world of digital marketing can seem daunting, so here are a few tips and tricks, that worked for me, for anyone out there who’s looking to start a career in digital marketing.

Expanding your knowledge can really make you stand out from the crowd when applying for any digital marketing job. There are thousands of free learning tools out there! Here are the ones I found the most useful:

  • Googles Digital Garage – I became certified in all areas of Google Ads. And another great Google course for any beginner is Fundamentals of Digital Marketing
  • Social Media Courses – As well as becoming certified on Google, there is also the option to become certified on all social media platforms, this includes LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook
  • YouTube – YouTube is full of educational content, for those who prefer more of a visual way of learning. Here are my favourite digital marketing YouTube videos; Simplilearn, Ahrefs, and Neil Patel
  • Lastly, a more traditional method of expanding your knowledge – books. Check out some of my favourites; ‘Jab Jab, Right Hook’ by Gary Vaynerchuk, ‘Permission Marketing’ by Seth Godin, and last but by far not the least ‘Building a Storybrand’ by Donald Miller
